“Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ has had a very successful launch, but we know our work has only begun.”  It’s an interesting statement when you think about it, especially when considering how many gamers are comparing SWTOR’s launch to every single MMO launch predating it.  But how successful has their launch really been?  And what determines that success?

SWTOR is a ground breaking MMO.  From the fully voice acted dialogue all the way to Huttball, the level and breadth of innovations that they have brought to the MMO space is staggering.  However with these innovations comes a plethora of inconsistencies and bugs to make any gamer raise an eyebrow in confusion.  Which brings me to the second half of BioWare’s quote, “…but we know our work has only begun.”

UPDATE: According to the folks in this thread the Anti-Aliasing that was introduced in 1.1 might be causing the issue. Some people have noted that turning of AAs have successfully fixed this problem.

With the release of the latest content patch, there have been reports that there is intermittent flickering of the game display when in Open World areas. Here is a quote from someone that has brought up this problem:

Since Patch 1.1 on January 18th 2012 some members of the community have been reporting intermittant screen flickering. This happens primarily in outdoor areas and the flicker can be varioius colors including black, white, purple and green. At this time Bioware has not acknowledged this as a concern despite many forum posts concerning this issue. This should not be confused with the random ‘loading art’ screen that would flicker on prior to patch 1.1.0a released on January 19th 2012.

Though it may seem minor, there has been some concern for those who have epilepsy. We here at Force Junkies are not medical experts, so please don’t take this as a warning or any type of professional opinion. We do not have any proof or reason to say that this flickering could be harmful. However there are some within our community that do suffer from this condition and have expressed their own concerns.

Tonight, Bioware has acknowledged this issue:

Dev Tracker, Star Wars: The Old Republic

With patch 1.1 came a lot of PVP issues in Ilum and if you stepped foot into the Official Forums than you undoubtedly know about them already. For those who don’t know, patch 1.1 put in some fixes into Ilum and some of the protections and balancing issues broke under heavy server loads. For example heavy population factions where able to camp spawn points in Ilum where players repeatedly died over and over and were not able to escape. There were other issues that allowed players to gain valor at incredible rates. These issues are now being address in an emergency patch today and everything is explained in the following post from Gabe:

Hello everyone; I wanted to update you on the issues we’ve been seeing today on the live servers, specifically within the Open World PvP area on Ilum. We’re aware that on some servers, either Republic or Empire groups have been capturing the Ilum control points, entering the enemy’s base and ‘camping’ the medcenters, preventing the opposite faction from leaving their base to recapture control points. This is not a fair or balanced gameplay experience and can also severely affect client performance, so we’re taking steps to address this.

Today we are releasing our first major Game Update, Rise of the Rakghouls. Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ has had a very successful launch, but we know our work has only begun. We want you, our fans, to know that we’ll continue expanding and exploring the galaxy, ensuring it’s a place where new adventures are constantly unfolding.

Both high and low level players will discover new content and game systems waiting for them in this Game Update. Our goal is to provide something exciting for every type of player in the game: PVP players, Flashpoint fans, Guild members, space combat aces and role-players.

This first Game Update will show everyone how serious we are about expanding Star Wars: The Old Republic, and there’s much more to come. We have another major update planned for March and future content arriving throughout 2012 and 2013. We plan to release new Operations, Flashpoints, Warzones, Space Missions, single player content, vehicles, and companion characters. We’ll always be improving our existing game with additions like guild banks, PVP ranked matches and interface customization. Our Legacy system expands in March, bringing more options and a new level of depth to the existing character classes.

Our Game Updates will also include bug fixes, balance changes, performance improvements and exploit-proofing based on your feedback. We review reports from the community every day and compare them to gameplay metrics, QA bugs and our own experiences in the live game—where we’re playing right alongside you. Although we already address critical issues during our weekly updates, the major Game Updates will implement some of the most sweeping changes and fixes.

Expect a few surprises between these Game Updates, too. You never know when the Republic might strike Dromund Kaas, if a mysterious alien fleet could appear in the Core Worlds… or when the Rakghoul plague of Taris might infect the rest of the Galaxy. Changes are coming, and they’ll affect everyone.

We fully intend to support Star Wars: The Old Republic—and our players—for many years to come.

James Ohlen
Game Director

“At an astonishing rate” is the best answer for the amount of content we’ve gotten since the official release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Soon we’ll be enjoying a brand new patch called “Rise of the Rakghouls” which introduces new raid content, a new flashpoint, and a plethora of bug fixes and game tweaks. It’s not typical for an MMO to receive such a large content update so soon after release and we’re all quite excited to dig in and enjoy patch 1.1! Karagga’s Palace will get 4 all new bosses to increase the total boss count to 5.

We’ll also be trying out Kaon Under Siege in which players will defeat the titular Rakghouls which are trying to spread their disease across the galaxy. In addition to the new flashpoint and operation updates, level 50 players will also be getting their own warzone tier. No longer can you fight at 50 with a level 10 and suffer defeat at the hands of a newbie. Bioware has also stated that this is only part one of a two-part story update.

In March we’ll be seeing patch two of Rise of the Rakghouls storyline, which will include Guild Banks, the second half of the Legacy system and more.

Bioware employees are out in force and talking to the press about the future of SWTOR. In a recent article, Rock, Paper, Shotgun spoke with James Ohlen about some of the things we might expect to see down the road.

Besides the content we already know about in patch 1.1 which includes a new Flashpoint.

According to Ohlen, the entire SWTOR team is still working flat-out on content for the released game. Next week’s update is just one of many they’re currently working on, with another much larger patch planned for March. It will contain part two of Rise Of The Rakghouls, and an entire new planet containing an operation and warzone, as well as “the second half of the Legacy System, which is the real meat of it.”
