SWTOR’s Legacy system is unique in the fact that it can be used to easily add quality-of-life features to the game in the form of Legacy perks. Most of the perks so far haven’t been game content, but rather– cool bonuses that make life easier. And speaking of content, since we’re kind of in a new content “in between patch” void at the moment, it’s an ideal time for players to think outside the box a little bit and imagine what other types of quality-of-perks they’d like to see added to the Legacy system.

One thread on the official forums has been made just for that purpose. In it, some players have very good ideas. We thought we’d share some of them. Keep reading, and feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments section!

MMORPG.come weighed in yesterday with some ideas on what a free-to-play Star Wars: The Old Republic model might look like. The full column can be found here. The term F2P (free-to-play) has been thrown around quite a bit in these past few months when it comes to SWTOR, but not just because of the worldwide decreasing server populations. That has a lot to do with it, sure, but many players simply feel SWTOR’s model would be well-suited to a F2P model.

As more and more MMOs’ release, it is evident that World of Warcraft’s success has been an anomaly. Remember when SWTOR was strutted as the next “WoW killer?” But ultimately a large exodus occurred, and layoffs followed. Many have since begun questioning the success of any subscription based MMO to follow. If Bioware is struggling with a subscription model when they have the biggest IP you can attach to an MMO, what hope is there for any other MMO that follows the same model? Essentially, Bioware needs to convert to the Free-to-Play model if they want to increase their profit and player base.

Star Wars: the Old Republic has two trade networks, The Galactic Trade Network (GTN) and The Hutt Trade Network (HTN). The former is a faction specific trading network, while the latter is a cross faction one that connects buyers and sellers throughout the galaxy. While the GTN is easily accessible at the faction Fleet, the HTN requires players to travel to Nar Shaddaa to access it.

Players can unlock an HTN terminal for all their characters’ ship by reaching Legacy Level 25 and paying 5 million credits. This has caused a lot of controversy, and many players on the forums are upset, because the legacy unlock is part of the Hutt Trade Network, which is rarely used. However, in an interview with Mos Eisley Radio, Lead Game Designer, Daniel Erickson revealed that very shortly the Hutts’ will buy out all the GTNs and convert them into neutral trading networks; creating one blanket economy between both factions. He added, “…with the legacy system players play on both sides and it doesn’t make since to artificially separate the economy.” With this change in mind, it stands to reason that the Galactic Market Kiosk for 5 million credits will be a worthwhile investment.

No MMO is complete without mini games. SWTOR is no different. Many people were excited about BioWare’s April’s fool joke of playing virtual janitor. During the Guild Convention, they did confirm that mini games would be coming, but they have yet to announce any. While we wait, in no particular order, here are 4 mini game ideas: Swoop Racing, Gambling, Holochess and Companion PVP. More on mini games after the break.

The legacy system has many fantastic features in store for the game, from new emotes to strange race/class combinations, but the idea that all of your characters must be related has caused a stir amongst the roleplaying community. Sure, the dev blog video has revealed that you have the option to list your character as allies as well as relatives, but inventive roleplayers may see the opportunity to create some of the epic family legacies that Star Wars is famous for. The tools that this system gives us can allow us to create epics of our own. Jump past the cut to see how family matters in a galaxy far, far away.

Hello everyone! At BioWare we’re always listening to our fans and we’ve heard our community’s comments around players with Level 50 characters being the only group awarded 30 days of play time. We appreciate the feedback and are pleased to announce that we are expanding our Legacy Promotion, also awarding 30 days of play time at no charge to players that have reached Legacy Level 6 (who may not have a 50th level character).

We just released the innovative Legacy System as part of Game Update 1.2, and felt that looking at Legacy point progression across all of your characters was a great way to reward our most avid players. This means that any of the experience you earn with any of your characters brings you closer to the goal of Legacy Level 6. The choice of how to get to Legacy Level 6 is yours.

First, you need to have passed Chapter 1 to unlock your legacy. Examples of how to get to Legacy Level 6 include:

  • A pair of characters Level 45 and 42
  • A trio of characters of Levels 45, 32 and 32
  • A bunch of characters Levels 35, 33, 31, 29 and 20
  • A single 50th level character that has enjoyed the endgame for a brief time

Remember these are just examples – you’re free to choose how to earn your Legacy experience to gain Legacy Level 6.

We’ve also got another significant piece of good news: everyone will have until April 22nd at noon CDT (5:00pm GMT – click here for a time zone converter) to have a Level 50 character or Legacy Level 6 on their account to get 30 days of game time on us. (Your 30 days of game time will be applied to your account on April 25th by 11:59pm CDT.) Players will now have multiple options, as well as more time, to try and reach these goals and play all the great new content in Game Update 1.2.

As always, we appreciate your feedback and will do our best to surprise and delight our customers.

Among the coming update 1.2 changes, one of the additions currently most debated is the Legacy system. Many players are looking forward to the new fluff abilities and cool ways to approach alt leveling. Many others feel that BioWare should prioritize other things before new emotes, sparkly abilities, and character family trees. Both sides of the coin have decent points in the argument, but it’s a little too late to argue either side. The Legacy system was intended to be in for launch.

Are there issues that seem more important than fluff abilities? Sure. Are some of the largest issues also being dealt with in 1.2? Yes. UI customization is the first that comes to mind, as well as the fixes for important issues like class-based ability delays and graphical issues. And let’s not forget, of course, that major new content is being added. The best thing BioWare could have done is exactly what they did with update 1.2– produce a little bit of everything.

Today we get William Wallace, Sr. Game Designer to tell us all about the legacy that is coming with the upcoming patch.

Where would you start if you were constructing the Skywalker family tree? Let’s start with Anakin. If you ask me, Anakin is a level 50 Sith Warrior anchoring the top of the family tree. He’s married to Padme Amidala and they have two kids, Luke and Leia. Luke and Leia were both strong in the Force, like their father before them. Leia ends up marrying Han Solo, undoubtedly a level 50 Smuggler, and they have three children who all turn out to be Jedi. Luke marries Mara Jade, and they in turn have Ben, who is also a powerful Jedi Knight. Looking at their family tree, it’s clear that the Skywalker legacy produces powerful Force users and great heroes.

You can read the complete post here on the SWTOR Official site as Mr. Wallace tells us all about the different Unlocks we’ll be able to get our hands on.

The Legacy System is coming in Game Update 1.2, and with it, a new dimension to The Old Republic™ experience. Like the Skywalkers, you’ll build your own family tree in the Star Wars™ galaxy, linking your characters on the same server together. Your achievements will open up new species options, new abilities for all the characters in your Legacy, and that’s only the beginning…
