Here is this week’s Q&A Community Response, where we take some of last week’s questions and corresponding answers, and provide some of the feedback straight from the community. This week’s Q&A, which can be found here, had a special free-to-play focus, and will be the last weekly Community Q&A BioWare will hold. In it, a few answers generated some heavy feedback. It seems that some questions raised more additional questions than answers, which is understandable given the fact that BioWare is releasing more F2P information in the months ahead. The MMO community has had a lot to say about Tuesday’s announcement since it went live. Many opinions are negative, many are encouragingly positive, and many lie somewhere in between. Most of us, I think, knew in the back of our minds that this may very well happen– the warning signs were there, after all– but the news nevertheless stung for many fans.

Star Wars: The Old Republic was a massive idea with a universe of awesome material to work with. BioWare started out strong, boasting a large budget and staff, and gave marketing plenty of attention. “It’s Star Wars. How can it go wrong?” many people rationalized. Sometimes a strong IP isn’t enough, and even the best of intentions and marketing tools can do nothing to stop a ship in need of repairs from hurtling toward the nearest docking bay. Does this mean SWTOR won’t be able to recover? Of course not. On the contrary– many fans think this is just what SWTOR needs– a totally new game plan.

This week’s Q&A, which can be found here, consisted of five questions. A couple questions generated some feedback, but this week we saw an interesting shift– most of the player feedback was actually based off the questions BioWare chose not to respond to. It seems that according to many players, the community Q&A is definitely losing some steam. Earlier this week, it was announced that SWTOR’s Executive Producer, Rich Vogel, was leaving BioWare. Vogel was a part of the BioWare Austin team for seven years, and has been in the industry for over 20. The news was confirmed yesterday when rumors of additional BioWare layoffs were reported by Gamasutra.

EA BioWare issued a statement regarding the layoffs yesterday:

“As we announced in May and detailed at E3, the BioWare Austin team is refining Star Wars: The Old Republic to continue to grow the game and the service.

As with the launch of any MMO, the size and skillset of the teams needed to maintain the game is different than the ones that built it. Starting in May, there have been staff reductions in the BioWare Austin studio. Some people have been platooned to other projects at BioWare Austin and EA SPORTS/Austin. Others have been released – qualifying personnel receive severance and outplacement assistance.

BioWare Austin is currently staffed to ensure the continued delivery of new, high quality game content for The Old Republic, and at a more frequent cadence. In the weeks ahead, we will announce plans for growing The Old Republic with new content, new players and new ways to play.”

Layoff news is rarely of the positive nature, but how is the loyal playerbase of SWTOR taking the news? Continue reading for some community feedback.

Despite the gloomy storm of complaints on the official forums, a large portion of SWTOR players are actually very pleased with the server transfer process so far. Evidence of these happy players is seen on most of the destination servers, where populations thrive, groups are readily formed, and planets and fleets buzz with activity. It’s nice to see life on our servers again. While browsing the forum topics last night, one in particular caught my eye that was positive.

Here is the first post in that thread:

“Dear Bioware,

I’m sorry to report that despite transfers, queues, nerfs, changes, redesigns and new content – That I remain mostly happy.

I would like to see a few things changed with the game, it’s by no means perfect, but these games never are. Personally I’d like to see a few more things made legacy wide such as datacrons, codexs, commendations etc.

Keep up the mostly good work.”

The thread goes on, with players chiming in, stating that they, too, are pleased with transfers, and remain mostly happy with the state of SWTOR despite the community’s negativity toward the game. What’s the one thing that will keep the game alive? That’s right– the players.
