Earlier this week, BioWare allowed players to test out the new high population server tech they planned to implement on our current servers. Today, that server tech is being added, and as a result, we’re seeing the final phase of our rather lengthy SWTOR server transfer and merge process. This final phase includes the consolidation and eventual removal of the originally-announced origin servers that had designated destination servers, and also, as a surprise– a few extra servers.

Yes, that’s right, some of the servers players were encouraged to moved to are now forcefully being consolidated into another server altogether. These players will find themselves having to play the choose-the-name game again today. There only seem to be a handful of new servers that were added to this consolidation list, thankfully, and the end result of all these server merges will hopefully be better in the long run. All players on any of the affected origin servers who didn’t take part in the transfers will find their characters moved.

Here’s the official announcement:

Earlier this summer we launched the Free Character Transfer Program which offered players the option to transfer their characters from specific origin servers to selected higher population destination servers. Following the success of the Free Character Transfer Program, and after closely monitoring server populations, we have now taken the next step in our on-going server population balancing process. We have upgraded destination servers in order to support a significantly higher number of players. In addition to this, all characters on origin servers have now been automatically transferred to be consolidated onto the upgraded destination servers. By centralizing our player populations on these higher population destination servers, we feel that we can offer our players the best possible Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ experience.

For a list of all of the servers being merged and consolidated into, please see the official Transfer information page, and click the “High population servers and consolidation matrix” link to see a complete list.

Today’s server consolidation does come with some bonuses. For one thing, we’ll all have access to 12 character slots. Hooray! Players with more than 12 characters on a server will find some characters blocked. No characters will be deleted. We’ll also be able to choose a new Legacy name upon logging in for the first time, a result from last week’s non-unique Legacy name change.
