BioWare likes to surprise us at times, and throw in random ways to get cool toys. The developers like to toss in semi-long quest chains and encourage us to stumble along cliff sides to grab stuff that isn’t always announced upon release. They also like to attach cool drops to bosses where they appear quite random, surprising players. This is rather cool, I think, because it rewards players for exploring, discovering, and sharing those discoverers with other players.
Vanity pets are one of the cool toys BioWare likes to add using this method. Vanity pets are good reward choices for random discoveries, because players of all levels and gear levels can benefit from them, and they’re a common item for serious collectors to drool over, yet even the most casual of players will admit to loving little critters following them around. I mean, really. Who doesn’t love little critters following them around?
After 1.2 was released, a few more vanity pets popped up, including some baby tauntauns. One of them, the [Taunlet], is especially a bit of a challenge to obtain. The [Orokeet] was also added, which is an adorable little bird that requires just a bit of work to discover. Fear not, pet lovers! There are plenty of resources out there to help us pick these little guys up, and other rare companions like them.
I figured I’d post a list of sorts to highlight some of the best resources out there. There may be other great places, of course! Feel free to toss me a comment if you know of any other great sites or posts. Here’s what I’ve got so far:
On the Hunt for SWTOR Companion Pets – Source: the Inquisitor’s Roadhouse blog. This guide’s awesome, has information on multiple types of vanity pets, and was recently updated for 1.2. An awesome blog to boot!
Tauntaun Mystery [Solved] – Source: a thread on SWTOR’s official forums, with all the detailed info about the tauntaun pets, and a great list of crafters on various servers who can assist players in obtaining the Taunlet (there’s a rare recipe drop needed).
Rakling and Other new 1.2 Pets – Source: another SWTOR official forum thread. The rakling can’t be obtained anymore, but the little guy obtainable from the Lost Island flashpoint still drops. Also, this is a place to look just in case any new 1.2 pets appear.
The Unusual Egg – Source: another SWTOR official forum thread. Detailed info and a handy video guide on how to obtain the Orokeet. Note: Information about this pet is still in the process of being discovered, so to speak, so all information may not be up to date.
